I am very serious about the "don't promote your own site" rule, as I have to be - to do otherwise would be to encourage spam.
Think of this as enhanced bookmarking, much as you would see on Stumbleupon or Diigo; you're encouraged to write about this, at length. You're also encouraged and well advised to write to me if you see somebody abusing this forum, which is here to help legitimate users with legitimate sites find a legitimate following.
Commercial sites are never welcome here, no matter how "well done" somebody claims to find them. I don't care about somebody's bookstore on Amazon, but if the site only justifies its own existence by getting people to buy stuff, it shouldn't be mentioned anywhere on this site. If you see somebody doing that, don't yell at him - for some reason, spammers are encouraged by that. Maybe because they know that shouting draws a crowd. No, write to me, and be patient, because I don't log in every day, but know that I will almost certainly ban the offender on sight, doing so by IP address if I can.
If you find that a pair of users seem to be scratching each other's backs a lot, tell me about that, too. I don't want to see anybody trying to get around the no self-promotion rule.
Avoid repetitious posting. I had been thinking of creating a "one discussion per site" rule, but saw problems with that. Some of the more interesting sites might raise a wealth of subjects ripe for discussion, and I wouldn't want to stifle that, but if somebody starts posting link after link to the same page, I'm going to consider that spam, and ban the offender on the spot.
